Watching the new ‘Mandarin Mermaid’ glide to another suspiciously easy victory yesterday - the prelude to what will doubtless be her second gold medal of these Games - my thoughts returned to the disturbing interview I conducted with another swimming sensation many years ago.
Just like China’s Ye Shiwen, East German Petra Schneider had astonished the world in winning the 400 metres medley - this time at the 1980 Moscow Olympics - producing a performance of such awesome power that her rivals (including Britain’s Sharron Davis, who won silver) seemed to be lesser mortals.
And as with 16-year-old Ye in London on Saturday night, so striking was Schneider’s superiority over young women who had trained equally long and hard that many observers wondered how she could possibly have been so much stronger, fitter and faster.

Sweat and tears: A young girl is pushed through a tough gymnastics exercise
This disquieting question cast a shadow over her achievement for 18 years. But then, during that unforgettable interview, in her cramped apartment in Chemnitz - or Karl-Marx-Stadt as it had been known when she was among the stars of the East German state swimming project - the five-time world record-holder finally came clean.
Having been identified as a potential champion as a little girl, she told me, she had been removed from school and placed in a ruthless training camp where she was identified by a number, Sportsperson 137, rather than a name.
There her every waking hour was devoted to bringing swimming glory to her country.
To increase her oxygen uptake she was forced to swim for hour upon hour in a vacuum contraption that sucked out the surrounding air; she was fed like a battery-farm turkey on a protein-rich diet; and, of course, she was injected with steroids - so frequently that, even then in her mid-30s, she suffered a plethora of health problems.
‘Sharron Davies was not racing against another swimmer that day - she was racing against a different species,’ she told me tearfully in an extraordinary mea culpa which later saw her ask for her world records to be expunged. ‘I was programmed to take the gold.’

Yet recalling the photographs Schneider had showed me of herself at a similar age, one well understands the fears voiced by America’s top swimming coach.

Ye Shiwen possesses that same masculine, almost wall-like figure; the same impossibly wide shoulders and huge, rounded thighs; the same armchair-leg calves. Rebecca Adlington is a strong woman, to be sure, but she still looks feminine; Ye, though barely out of adolescence, appears androgynous.

-------------譯者:落木蕭蕭------------- so ruthless and inhumane. - wake up, somewhere in the world, 31/7/2012 11:00 實(shí)在是太殘忍無情了。
I don't know why athletes have to look feminine for western standards for these commentators, I was watching weightlifting and there was a competitor from Thailand that looked like a man to me yet no one is challenging her results because the US or UK had no chance of winning gold in that discipline. Maybe that's the way she is and she just happens to be super talented, no one questioned Phelps for getting 7 golds in Beijing and that was "superhuman" ability as well instead everyone cheered for him.
This is heartbreaking. I can never bear to root against the Chinese athletes because I feel so sorry for them. That country turns them into robots. What a terrible life they must live.
Maybe they ought to look back at Petra Schneider's file again!
I'm not a bit surprised as under communism, every person exists to serve the state. Prayers for the children.
What is in that woman's hand, an electrical prod?
-------------譯者:loriana777------------- The red arrows will flow but when is the rest of the world going to hold China accountable for their appalling human rights record. The cruelty and dismissive care that the Chinese government have towards their own people and anything else that walks and breathes is a disgusting blight on humanity. Children suffering from lack of medical care, forget it if you were born female, the elderly being forgotten, endangered species being destroyed because of archaic beliefs in their medical prowess, countries like Tibet being invaded and its citizens treated like rubbish the list is endless. I personally don't see much difference between China and North Korea. Cruelty to its people has always been prominent in China, you would think after a few thousand years they would have evolved into more caring nation.
The photo of the little girl doing the split...is not only done in China. They are done all over the gyms here in the US as well....anyone with a child on team gymnastics has seen it. The reason is at a young age, if the splits have repeatedly been done wrong (legs to the side) then as they further into gymnastics, the leg has to be corrected, also, in order to do the floor routines and bar routines, the hip joint has to be able to bend upward, the exercise the young girl is doing in the split corrects this and gears the hip joint for what it will need to do in the future. Yes, the first few weeks its painful (just as any stretches are in the beginning) but eventually, it becomes just like any other stretch. My 5 year old is on pre-team. She has just gotten to the point where she can do it herself, it was hard to watch, but each week, she wants to go back, she is determined to get a trophy..and be a pink ninja. :) Crazy child.
Of course Ye Shiwen never intended to win gold. The state must have forced her to win anything After all, unlike Europeans, people of China lacked self motivation and needed state sponsored force to succeed in anything, right?
-------------譯者:zg105959------------- Individualism, dignity and suffering matters little for the glory of the country and a government with unlimited power and control over every fascet of citizens' lives. Think of this when zealot college politicos like Elizabeth Warren use China as an example of an ideal political system. I and millions who escaped it disagree.
If adults were being abused in this fashion- would it be tolorated. No, it wouldn't. One day, children will have human rights and they will not be able to be used as the pons for adult whims. - deb, bloomington, americWell, since we KNOW this abuse is going on- why do we condone it? Not just condone it- encourage and reward it. a, 31/7/2012 11:29 如果成人虐待孩子的時(shí)尚會(huì)被容忍......
Does anyone else notice that in each historical significant case (the East Germans, the Russians, the Chinese) it's always been a communist state whose goal was to make the West look weak? And yet for two of the three (and, if we are all honest, even for China) it is the Communist state that collapses under the weight of its own brutality and hypocrisy? Perhaps China needs to remind itself that one does not dominate the world (or even force most of the world to notice) by winning gold at the Olympics.

I don't understand why they would highlight this article and pull the politic into the Olympic games together. It's very common to train the child this way from they were young all over the world, so they won't use the wrong method to create some injuries! More this kind of article just alert the Asia and other nation to understand how racism the western and the American are and they are too afraid any nation do better than themselves!
Is there anyone, honestly surprised by this? It has been common knowledge since the roid days of the 70s and happens even now today in the US, among others. I feel sorry for the children.
